Obesity and overweight
What is Overweight
Overweight is an unhealthy excessive accumulation of fat in the human body. Overweight differs from obesity in that a person is considered overweight when their Body Mass Index (BMI) exceeds 2. If the index exceeds 30, it indicates obesity. In both cases, weight is not proportionate to height.
Causes of Overweight
There are multiple factors contributing to overweight, including:
- Genetic factors
- Metabolic rate.
- Adopting an unhealthy diet and harmful lifestyle.
- Smoking
- Taking steroidal medications.
- -Stress, which may be accompanied by excessive appetite.
- Lack of sleep
- Pregnancy
- Fluid retention in the body due to excess salts or heart failure.
- Certain diseases that cause weight gain, such as (insulin resistance, hypothyroidism, fatty liver).
Prevention and Treatment Management
Overweight and obesity, as well as their associated non-communicable diseases, can largely be prevented and managed therapeutically.
At the individual level, people can reduce their risk of these problems by adopting preventive interventions at every stage of the life cycle, starting from the pre-conception stage and continuing through the early years of life. These interventions include:
Ensuring normal weight gain during pregnancy;
Practicing and supporting exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months after birth, and continuing breastfeeding until the infant reaches 24 months or more;
Encouraging children to adopt behaviors centered around healthy eating, physical activity, avoiding sedentary behaviors, and getting enough sleep, regardless of current weight;
Reducing screen time;
Limiting the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and high-calorie foods, and promoting other healthy eating behaviors;
Enjoying a healthy life (following a healthy diet, engaging in physical activity, getting sufficient and good sleep, avoiding tobacco and alcohol use, and self-regulating emotions);
Reducing overall energy intake from fats and sugars and increasing the consumption of fruits and vegetables, as well as legumes, whole grains, and nuts;
Engaging in regular physical activity.
