What is weight gain?
Overweight is the unhealthy accumulation of excess fat in the human body. Overweight differs from obesity, as a person is considered overweight when his body mass index (BMI) exceeds 2. An index exceeding 30 means obesity. In both cases, weight is not proportional to height.
Causes of weight gain
There are many factors that cause weight gain, including:
- genetic factors
- Speed of metabolic processes.
- Adopting an unhealthy diet and a harmful lifestyle
- smoking
- Taking steroid medications.
- - Stress that may accompany excessive appetite.
- lack of sleep
- Pregnancy
- Fluid retention due to excess salts or heart failure
- Some diseases that cause weight gain, such as (insulin resistance, hypothyroidism, fatty liver)
Prevention and treatment
Overweight and obesity, as well as the non-communicable diseases associated with them, are largely preventable and manageable.
At the individual level, people may be able to reduce their risk of these problems by adopting preventive interventions at every stage of the life cycle, beginning before pregnancy and continuing through the early years of life. These interventions include:
Ensure normal weight gain during pregnancy;
Practicing and supporting exclusive breastfeeding in the first 6 months after birth, and continuing breastfeeding until the infant reaches 24 months of age or older;
Encourage children to adopt behaviors that revolve around eating healthy foods, exercising, avoiding sedentary behaviors, and getting enough sleep, regardless of their current weight.
Reducing screen time;
Limiting consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and high-calorie foods and promoting other healthy eating behaviors;
Enjoy a healthy life (eating a healthy diet, exercising, getting enough and good sleep, avoiding tobacco and alcohol, and self-control of emotions);
Reducing energy intake from fats and sugars overall and increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables, as well as legumes, whole grains and nuts;
And regular physical activity
